What is the Gospel?
The Gospel is simply the good news that we who are sinners and bound for an eternity in hell can be saved when we repent of our sins and put our trust in Jesus Christ the Son of God.
The Apostle Paul summarizes the message of the Gospel for us in First Corinthians 15 verses 1-4 “Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”
The message of salvation is explained thoroughly in the New Testament book of Romans and can be summarized as follows:
All humans are sinners. Romans 3:10-11, 23 say “As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.” “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
We cannot save ourselves: because of our sin, we all are destined for eternal death; Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
However, God loves us and has provided a solution for our sin problem and its penalty. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
If we repent of our sins and call upon the Lord Jesus Christ to save us, we will be saved. Romans 10:9-10, 13 say, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation....For ‘whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’”
